Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal civil rights law that protects people from discrimination based on sex. The scope of Title IX applies to education, harassment, employment, and more. Be sure to take the Title IX certification at your school!
The Green Dot program approaches all college students, administrators, and faculty as allies of sexual assault victims. It prevents dating violence, sexual violence, and stalking. It relies on the theory that if everyone does their part, the combined effect will be very powerful and that the number of victims (green dots) will decrease. You too can become Green Dot certified in prevention strategies!
April 24 honors Sexual Violence Awareness Month. This campaign was triggered by an Italian Supreme Court ruling where rape was justified by the tight jeans the woman was wearing, the justicies felt that the pants implied consent. The next day of the trial, all of the women in the court room arrived wearing jeans. This denim campaign advocates for rape prevention and education with a big statement. Wear your denim on April 24!
The MeToo Movement was founded in 2006 to help the survivors of sexual assault find healing. One of the hopes was to build a commuity of advocates who would help to prevent sexual misconduct in the community. The viral hastag spread through Twitter and sparked conversation around the world. There is work still to be done, find resources and help in your community!
Take Back the Night events aim to end sexual assault, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and all forms of sexual violence. The events can take many shapes, such as marches, protests, and many others. The combined effects of the events is what makes the movement so powerful. A list of locations can be found on their website, see if there is an event near you!
