SCIENCE FICTION TIMELINE 
• Fantasy
came before SF. It came around to explain the gods.
• Sf came into being in the early 19th century.
• 19th century became one of optimism.
• Jules Verne was recognized as the first science fiction author to make a living off writing SF stories.
• 1818- Mary Shelley publishes Frankenstein. Considered the first true SF novel.
• 1895- H.G. Wells published The Time Machine. The first time travel novel.
• 1898- H.G. Wells published The War of the Worlds. Story about alien invasion.
• WWI- Ended the childlike optimism of the 19th century. Humanity ended, came into the picture.
• 1926- The first SF magazine Amazing Stories was published.
• The Great Depression which lead to pessimistic views of the world.
• Astounding Stories/ Science Fiction was the magazine in the WWII time.
• WWII- The atom bomb was dropped. The future caught up with them and
people are no longer innocent to the way of the machine. They discovered what
was written in the novels could come true.
• Industrial Revolution occurs. The era of the machine begins.
• 1960’s The New Wave Occurs. People are disillusioned with science and found relief in science fiction literature.
• 1980s– Cyberpunk era begins
